Downloading and setting up the app

The official TfL Oyster app is available as a free download from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

You need an Oyster online account to use the app. Once you've downloaded the app, sign in with the username and password that you use for your account.

If you don't already have an Oyster online account, you'll be able to create one using the app. You'll need to provide your:

  • Name
  • Address
  • Email address

When you've created your account, add your Oyster card by entering the full card number and answering your security question (if the card is registered). If your Oyster card isn't registered, you'll need to provide details of the last journey you made using your card.

Discounted season tickets can't be purchased and Oyster photocards can't currently be used with the app.

Features of the app

Once you've signed in to the app, you'll be able to:

  • Top up your pay as you go credit
  • Buy adult rate 7 Day, Monthly, 3 month, 6 month and Annual Travelcards and Bus & Tram Passes
  • Check your pay as you go balance and see season tickets on your Oyster card
  • View your journey history
  • Select the threshold that triggers a notification when your balance gets too low
  • Allow a notification when your Travelcard is about to expire

When you top up your credit or buy a Travelcard, it'll be available to collect after 30 minutes when you touch your Oyster card on a yellow card reader as part of a journey on any London bus; or at any Tube, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail or National Rail station within the pay as you go area; tram stop or River Bus pier.

New features are being developed, so soon you'll also be able to use the app to:

  • View the journey history for your contactless card
  • Apply for refunds

How to top up using the app

Older Oyster cards

Older Oyster cards don't work with the app. If you have an older card, you can still use it to travel, but to use the app you'll need to replace it with a new Oyster card.
